KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 20 — Newly-crowned world junior champion Goh Jin Wei is not underestimating her opponents at the Asean Schools Games (ASG) from Nov 21-29 in Brunei.
The 15-year-old shuttler said winning the world junior title will not distract her from the opponents, especially those from Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia.
“I will use my skills and experience in international tournaments in trying to win the gold medal in the women’s singles event. Last year, I lost to Lee Ying Ying to emerge runner-up.
“Winning the world junior title has made me more confident,” she told reporters when met at the ASG flag presentation ceremony at the Bukit Jalil Sports School here today.
The Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) has named 122 athletes to vie in athletics, badminton, silat, netball, golf, swimming and sepak takraw.
Meanwhile, chef-de-mission Zainuren Mohd Nor is optimistic that Malaysia can defend the overall champions title won last year.
Malaysia won 41 gold medals, 34 silver medals and 30 bronze medals at ASG 2014 hosted by the Philippines.

Malaysia Confident Of Becoming Overall Champions In Asean School Games

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia are confident they can become overall champions for the third time in the sixth edition of Asean Schools Games although hosts Brunei have reduced the number of sports from 12 to seven.
The Games, which began in 2010, will begin Saturday and end on Nov 29.
A total of 88 gold medals will be up for grabs in athletics, badminton, golf, netball, pencak silat, swimming and sepak takraw.
National contingent chief Zainuren Mohd Nor said that they’ve set a target of winning 26 gold medals in their bid to become overall champions.
“All our 122 athletes are mentally and physically prepared for action in all seven sports. We believe that they will deliver the goods in Brunei,” said Zainuren, who is also the Selangor Sports Education director.
Dr Mehander Singh, the Malaysian Education Ministry’s director of sports department, handed over the Jalur Gemilang to Zainuren at the Olympic Hall at the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) on Friday.
Malaysia did not feature in the first Asean Schools Games in Suphanburi, Thailand, in 2010. Malaysia emerged champions in Kuala Lumpur in 2011 and in Marikina City, the Philippines, last year.

International Debut For Sabah Duo

Kota Kinabalu: State Junior golfers Christopher Daniel James and Tham Soot Yuet are set to make their international debut with the recent call-up by the Ministry to represent Malaysia in the 7th Asean School Games in Brunei from Nov 21-19.
Their inclusion in the eight-member national team was based on their good outing at the Malaysia Schools Sports Council (MSSM) National Golf Championship held in Penang's Bukit Jawi Golf Resort back in June.
Christopher, 14, who is a Form Two student at SM All Saints, was the champion in the boys under-15 category and he also helped Sabah to win silver in the team event while Tham from SM Tshung Tshin, who is sitting for her SPM right now, won bronze in the girls under-18.
Both players are currently shortlisted for the Kuching Sukma Games squad.
The duo will leave for the national capital on Nov 20 to join their teammates before departing for the Sultanate on Nov 21.
They are unlikely to take part in the 10th Sabah International Junior Masters this Thursday even though their names are on the list.
