Terus Fokus

- Bernama

Malaysia Finish Second Overall In Asean Schools Games

Adam Arif Madzri won Malaysia’s only medal in golf after taking bronze in the boys’ individual competition.
Adam Arif Madzri won Malaysia’s only medal in golf after taking bronze in the boys’ individual competition.
PETALING JAYA: The netball team delivered an unexpected gold medal but it was not enough for Malaysia to retain the overall champions title at the 7th Asean Schools Games in Bandar Sri Begawan, Brunei.
Malaysia chalked up a convincing 67-33 win over arch-rivals Singapore to finish the round-robin competition undefeated.
Malaysia had earlier beaten hosts Brunei 76-14 and Thailand 64-17.
Singapore settled for silver while Thailand got the bronze after beating Brunei 45-20.
Fourteen-year-old Adam Arif Madzri won Malaysia’s only medal in golf after taking bronze in the boys’ individual competition.
Adam’s four-day total of 23-over 311 saw him finish third out of 26 golfers in the Under-18 field.
Thailand’s Chonjarern Baramithanaseth took silver with a 19-over 307 total while Indonesian Almay Rayhan Yagutah won gold with an eight-over 296 total.
Indonesia, who bagged six out of the 10 gold medals in pencak silat, took the overall title with a haul of 25-24-10.
Malaysia finished second overall with a 20-14-22 haul.
Athletics contributed nine gold medals – the most – towards Malaysia’s final medal count, which was made more memorable by Badrul Hisham Abdul Manap’s success in smashing the 17-year-old men’s national 100m record.
The 18-year-old became the country’s newest sprint sensation after clocking a sizzling 10.29 to erase the old mark of 10.30 held by Sarawakian Watson Nyambek since 1998.
Swimming contributed eight gold medals, with Welson Sim raking in four – the biggest individual haul – from 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 400m freestyle and 4x100m freestyle relay.
Besides netball, Malaysia also won two gold medals in badminton.
Malaysian contingent chief Zainuren Mohd Nor said there were fewer sports compared to the previous edition in the Philippines last year. “We had 12 sports last year in the Philippines, but this time there were only seven sports contested. We missed out on a few targeted golds in athletics and badminton,” he said.

Jin Wei Claims Easy Win For Asean Schools Games Gold

KUALA LUMPUR: There is just no stopping shuttler Goh Jin Wei.
The 15-year-old reigning world junior champion needed only 35 minutes to beat Indonesia’s Gabriela Meilani Moningka 21-11, 21-8 for the girls’ singles title in the seventh edition of the Asean Schools Games in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei.
Earlier in the semi-finals, she had beaten Laksika Kanlaha of Thailand 21-8, 21-8 in just 24 minutes.
Jin Wei also made it to the girls’ doubles final with Anna Cheong Ching Yik, but they lost 21-14, 6-21, 12-21 to Indonesians Meirisa Cindy Sahputri-Nisak Puji Lestari.
And there’s more to come from the “Energizer Bunny” Jin Wei as she heads for the India International Challenge in Mumbai from Dec 9-13.
National coach Rony Agustinus said that their main goal is to help Jin Wei make steady progress in her world ranking. The youngster is at No. 143 after only playing in five international tournaments this year.
“I’m sure she will be tired now. Our next plan is to send her to the India International Challenge. We want her to improve on her world ranking by doing well there,” said Rony.
“Next year, we will also try to enter her for one or two Grand Prix Gold tournaments. She is full of energy and ... we want to tap her potential.
“We’re not pushing her or putting undue pressure on her, but we’re supporting her in the best way we can. She is just enjoying herself and we want to keep it that way.”
There was mixed fortunes for Malaysia in the boys’ events at the Asean Schools.
Ooi Zi Heng-Soh Wooi Yik defeated M. Fachricar-M. Reza Fahlevi Ihsafani of Indonesia 21-18, 21-12 in the boys’ doubles final for their first title.
Leong Jun Hao then came close to making it a day of triple joy for Malaysia, but retired after trailing 15-21, 23-21, 15-18 to Ramadhani Muhd Zulkifli of Indonesia in the boys’ singles final.

KUALA LUMPUR: Talented youngsters Welson Sim and Ng Yi Hao have splashed their way to golden victories for Malaysia in the swimming competition of the 7th Asean Schools Games in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei.
The 18-year-old Welson left Thailand’s Chakorn Wanpern trailing in his wake as he powered his way to win the boys’ 400m freestyle final in 3:57.16. The Thai clocked 4:01.73, with Singapore’s Wong Jun Bin settling for the bronze in 4:05.05.
Sarawak-born Welson also won the same event at the Singapore SEA Games in June and posted a new national record of 3:52.57 to finish eighth at the FINA World Cup leg in Doha.
The 16-year-old Yi Hao delivered the second gold for Malaysia in the boys’ 200m breaststroke event when he led all the way in the final to touch the wall in 2:21.78, ahead of Indonesian Ilham Turmudzi (2:22.63) and Thai Sophonwich Traiwijsutitong (2:24.99).
Yi Hao was named the best swimmer (for boys) in this year’s MSSM swimming championships in Shah Alam for breaking two meet records – the 50m and 100m breaststroke events.
Welson and Yi Hao were also fastest in their preliminaries.
Angela Chieng was the fastest qualifier for the girls’ 400m freestyle but could not maintain the momentum in the final. The Sarawak-born Angela settled for silver in 4:31.79, behind Indonesia’s Sagita Putri Krisdewanti (4:28.57). Another Malaysian, Nadia Adrianna Redza (4:31.88) got the bronze.

Badrul Hisham Does The Double at Asean Schools Games

KUALA LUMPUR: Badrul Hisham Abdul Manap has emerged as the top sprinter in the Asean Schools Games in Brunei after bagging the double sprint.
The 18-year-old, who smashed the 17-year-old national record of 10.30 by clocking a personal best of 10.29 in the boys’ 100m final in Bandar Seri Begawan on Monday, has rewritten his own meet record by clocking 21.39 in winning the 200m on Tuesday.
It was a 1-2 for Malaysia in the race as Khairul Hafiz Jantan clocked an impressive 21.47 for the silver, while Thailand’s Vitsanu Phosri (22.05) took bronze.
The Malacca boy’s previous meet record of 21.61 was set in Marikina City, the Philippines, last year.
His new 200m time, however, is still way off his personal best of 20.88, which he set in the Universiti Malaysia Kangar (Unimap) Open in Arau last month.
The good news is that Badrul has qualified on merit for next year’s Under-19 Junior World Championships. (IAAF have yet to decide on the venue and competition date after Russia were banned from hosting it in Kazan in July following a doping scandal).
Badrul, who is doing his pre-university studies at the Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI) in Johor, was thrilled with his achievement.
“My mission today was to clock a personal best in the 200m ... after I had broken the national 100m record. But I failed to do it because of wind conditions,” said Badrul, who will be going for his treble in the 4X100m relay on Wednesday.
“But I’m happy to rewrite my own meet record. I will continue to train harder to improve my time at next year’s Junior World meet.”
Malaysia bagged four more golds on Tuesday.
R. Kirthana broke the girls’ triple jump record with a leap of 12.69m to erase the five-year-old mark of 12.67m set by Jamjuree Kwangsong of Thailand in Kuala Lumpur in 2010.
Faris Hazim Jamaluddin broke the boys’ discus record with a throw of 53.14m, beating the previous mark of 52.95m set by Thailand’s Suriya Putkaew in Surabaya in 2012.
The other two gold medals came from Mohd Rizzua Haizad Muhamad, who clocked 14.24 in the boys’ 110m hurdles; and Quek Lee Yong, who posted a personal best time of 52.18 in the boys’ 400m hurdles.

Badrul Shatters National 100m Record in Asean Schools Meet

KUALA LUMPUR: Schoolboy Badrul Hisham Abdul Manap (pic, right) ran the race of his life to shatter the 17-year-old men’s national 100m record.
The 18-year-old clocked a sizzling 10.29 seconds at the Asean Schools Games in Brunei on Monday to shatter Sarawakian Watson Nyambek’s 10.30 set at the 1998 pre-Commonwealth Games. He retained the gold, having won in 10.49 in last year’s Games in Marikina City in the Philippines.
Badrul, who is doing his pre-university studies at the Tuanku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI) in Johor, clocked 10.48 for his personal best at the Kedah Open in April this year.

Badrul Raja Pecut Baru [VIDEO]

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia akhirnya memiliki raja pecut baru!

Presiden Kesatuan Olahraga Malaysia (KOM), Datuk Karim Ibrahim berkata, pencapaian Badrul membanggakan memandangkan atlet muda itu memecahkan rekod kebangsaan bertahan sekian lama.

Msian Teen Breaks Watson Nyambek's 17-year 100m Sprint Record

KUALA LUMPUR: Asian schoolboy champion Badrul Hisyam Manap set a new national 100 metres record of 10.29 seconds when he won gold at the Asean Schools Games in Bandar Sri Begawan today.

Badrul, 18, hailed in various quarters as a future sprinting prospect, erased the previous record of 10.30 seconds set by Watson Nyambek just before the 1998 Commonwealth Games.

Malacca-born Badrul won the final with relative ease after finishing almost half-a-second ahead of second-placed teammate Asnawi Hashim, who clocked 10.71 seconds.

The wind measurement was a tailwind of 1.92 metres a seconds, within the legal limit of 2.0. The win meant Badrul successfully defended the 100m title he won last year in Marikina City, Philippines as part of a sprint double.

Just before the current meet in Brunei, Badrul displayed his potential last month when became the country's fastest 200m runner ever posting 20.88 seconds at the Unimap Open in Arau, faster than Tan Sri Dr M. Jegathesan's 1968 record of 20.92s.

Unfortunately for Badrul, the time was set with a tailwind exceeding 2.0m/s and cannot be recognised as a record.

However, the performance was enough to mark Badrul as talent for the future after running then-personal bests of 10.48s and 21.31s in the 100m and 200m respectively at the Kedah Open in April.

He then won 200m gold at the Southeast Asian Youth Championships in Naypyidaw before claiming the 100m title at the Asian Schools Championships in Wuhan.
