(NST) ASG 2018 : Gymnasts on a roll at Asean School Games


KUALA LUMPUR: The national rhythmic gymnastics squad ended their campaign at the Asean School Games (ASG) today with a clean sweep of the six gold on offer in the sport.
After two gold were won yesterday, another four gold were up for grabs in the competition today in the clubs, ball, hoops and ribbon disciplines.
And as expected the highly experienced Izzah Amzan was the standout gymnast for Malaysia, bagging five gold and one silver throughout the competition.
Izzah, who won the individual all around and team event yesterday, added the clubs, ball and ribbon gold as well as the hoops silver today.
The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games silver medallist said she was pleased to have bettered her performance compared to the Singapore ASG last year.
"I feel happy and relieved to do better here. Last year I won four gold, one silver and one bronze (in Singapore," said Izzah.
"The competition this year was not easy as many younger and very talented gymnasts had come here to compete."
She scored 15.500 points to come out tops in the clubs ahead of national teammate Rayna Hoh (14.350) as well as joint-third placed duo T. Arisa of Thailand and Althea Descutido (Philippines) who were both tied on 10.850.
Izzah clinched the ball gold after scoring 14.350 while Ng Jia Wen (11.600) settled for silver. Wahyu Yolanda Putri (Indonesia) and Singapore's Angelina Lin shared the bronze after being tied on 9.950.
Her third gold of the day came via the ribbon which she won on 11.550. Iris Hoo (11.350) and Kanpicha Patanasak (9.450) of Thailand came in second and third.
Rayna clinched the hoops gold on 14.900 with Izzah taking silver with 14.300. Piyada Peeramatukorn (Tha) completed the podium with a 10.550 score.
